Fusion splicing of plastic optical fibers using a mid-IR fiber laser

Abstract This work demonstrated the fusion splicing of plastic optical fibers (POFs) using a 2.8 μ m continuous-wave fiber laser. mid-IR laser-based technique does not require use adhesives or any other treatments. The performance proposed method was investigated by assessing transmission, tensile strength and bending values POF specimens after bonding while employing various conditions. An transmission 0.76 obtained under appropriate A minimum radius samples were found to be 1.5 mm 13.5 N, respectively.
